What to Do in Different Lockout Situations

If you think you left your keys somewhere specific, ask the people in charge there if anyone has turned them in. Sometimes you can get lucky by retracing your steps. If that’s not the case, or your key broke off in the lock, or another problem is plaguing you, read on to learn how to resolve lockout situations of all varieties.

If it’s a home lockout…

Lockouts from homes and apartments are extremely common. We’ve all had that moment where we reach for our keys and find them missing, but usually luck is on our side and we find them after a little bit of searching. However, occasionally, you realize that your house keys are truly lost or even worse, stolen. This can happen when we’re rushing around at the end of a hectic workday, or when we’re out shopping for last minute supplies for a party. Whenever it occurs, it can be stressful and frightening. The first thing to do is to check and make sure that none of your doors or windows have been unlocked by mistake. While security professionals recommend always keeping things locked up tight, occasionally you might forget and this could leave you with a way to get back inside your home.

If it’s a safe lockout…

A safe provides great protection to your home or business assets. Today’s safes are extremely sturdy and dependable, and have many security features that prevent burglaries and fire damage. However, when you’re having your safe installed you may not think about how you’ll be able to get into your safe if you have an issue with it, such as forgetting your combination, the safe lock mechanism jamming, or a lost key. While these situations are uncommon, they do happen from time to time. If you’re experiencing a safe lockout, it’s best not to try to open it yourself by means of force. Contact a locksmith instead. They will have the tools and techniques needed to open any type of safe, and will try the least invasive methods possible first and work their way up. In the event that your safe needs to be drilled, a locksmith can replace the lock mechanism so you can still use the safe later.
